The Law Of Attraction – Powerful Or Complete B.S?

Recently I was on a walk with a friend and we were talking about how we’d met our partners. My story was pretty simple. He used to workout every day at the gym where I was a trainer – and he used to own the restaurant downstairs from the gym, which was where myself and my crew would get our daily (okay, thrice daily) coffees. Anyone who has worked in a gym or attended one regularly will attest that it’s basically nothing but a live breeding ground. Add great coffee and a cheeky smile to that and you’ve got a recipe for action 🙂

Anyway.

My friend met her husband through different means. She attracted him into her life. Or so she says. You’ve heard of the law of attraction, right? As a concept, it was most recently popularised by the movie The Secret, but the idea has been around for eons.

In fact, one of my favourite motivation/inspirational gurus, Brian Tracy, talks about the law of attraction in books dating back several decades – yet still highly applicable. Steven Covey is another famous self-help guru who speaks of concepts like the law of attraction. He is famous for the following saying, which is one of my all-time favourites.

Sow a thought, plant an action

Sow an action, plant a habit

Sow a habit, plant a character

Sow a character, reap a destiny

I think I missed one, but you definitely get the idea.

With my friend, it wasn’t just a man she decided she wanted – and would have. There were some other pretty major things as well. A house in a certain part of Sydney. A cruise. A luxury car. A baby.

You might scoff or say obviously she’s just a go-getter, or determined, or lucky, or all three. But isn’t that the same thing?

can you really ‘attract’ the perfect life?

A vision board is a popular thing to do. For me, while the idea does appeal, I never quite get around to it. This is probably because journaling works really well for me.

Let me give you an example –

I’ve always kept an on and off journal. Sometimes I might go for months without writing in it, and there will be patches – like at the moment – and usually when I’m trying to work through something or create something new like my blog Woman Incredible – when I’ll just keep coming back to it.

And here’s where it gets really powerful.

In doing this, I wasn’t even consciously trying to implement the law of attraction. I just planted the seeds. But you know what? Whenever I got back through previous journals and lists of goals I always seem to have achieved at least 80% of what I’ve written about. Often it’s stuff I’d forgotten I’d even written, but it has still come to fruition. It actually gives me chills sometimes when I go back through my old journals.

but let’s get real – you gotta take action

Sitting around daydreaming about all the wonderful things you’d like in your life is not going to get you anywhere without some action. The idea is not that you can do magic, but rather, that you actively engage in planting seeds that become positive actions and eventually habits.

And common sense prevails – the more frequently you engage in detailed daydreaming or visualisation of what you’d like – and be specific as possible – the more those things will become utmost on your mind. Confidence and determination can be built and made stronger just like ‘real’ muscles. And whatever is utmost on your mind is bound to influence your actions, isn’t it?

For me, it’s about getting my mind and intentions in the right place for your actions and behaviours to follow suit. It’s about training myself to become mentally stronger, more sure of myself, and more focused on what’s really important to me. On a similar note, another saying I love is this one:

“you are what you think about, most of the time”

Actually, I’m pretty sure that’s Brian Tracy as well!!

what’s on your mind?

If you spend the day thinking about eating chocolate at night, what’s going to happen? If you spend a few minutes each morning thinking about your most important goals for that day, about what you’d like to get out of that day, and then actively planning to do what it takes to make those things happen, what ‘impossible dreams’ do you think you might be able to achieve?

I don’t have to tell you that little goals achieved day in and day out become big goals over time.

So whether it’s putting steps into place to put yourself out there to meet the perfect partner – and having your mind in the right place to attract that partner rather than being focused on how you’ll ‘never meet anyone’, or believing that you deserve a higher income and therefore you’re going to follow suit, your actions will always follow your thoughts.

So what’s on your mind? What are you thinking about?

And what seeds could you plant today? Please share your thoughts in the comments below!

And remember –

Life is Now. Press Play.

PS: Today that friend is happily married with a beautiful baby daughter, her ‘dream’ husband, and a thriving business. She’s still a strong believer in the law of attraction.
